Assignment #9 Oppression essay

Oppressed people means when people with power oppress others and some times harms them and they have no freedom. Systems of oppression is a plethora of acts of abuse . Levels of oppression is when oppression happens because of rules( Institutional oppression) ,actions of another person( Interpersonal oppression ),believe negative narratives that others tell about them( Internalized oppression ) and those are called the 3 levels of oppression. Some ways oppressed people experience the different Systems of Oppression and Levels of Oppression is they make other people feel the way they feel or look a certain way because of what they think.

To begin with, Some ways oppressed people experience the different Systems of oppression and Levels of oppression is they persuade people to believe what they are saying to make people feel less of themselves. This document I read talked about how Afghan girl where facing Interpersonal oppression because terrorist will stop at nothing to stop Afghan girls from receiving an education . Also this document is a website article called“ Acid attacks,poison : What Afghan girls risk by going to school “ and was written by Allie Torgan on March 17,2016. A quote thats proves evidence to my answer what are some ways oppressed people experience the different systems of oppression and levels of oppression is “There were at least 185 documented attacks on schools and hospitals in Afghanistan last year, according to the United Nations. The majority were attributed to armed groups opposed to girls’ education”. This reveals that Afghan girls were facing oppression because terrorist who are oppressed felt that afghan girls where to not be educated which is not fair so they poison they water and threw acid in they face to make they become less of themselves.

Power is the ability to control events and the behaviors of other people. In order to marginalize someone you has to have power. Exploit means to take advantage pf someone of your own benefit. People with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because they have more power ,weapons with these things people are able to do what they want to do like kill people, hurt people ,make people feel bad, make them believe things that are not true which are able to control people .

To begin with, Power is the ability to control events and the behaviors of other people. In order to marginalize someone you have to have power. And second, Exploit means to take advantage of someone of your own benefit. People with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because they have more power and weapons and are able to control them.To Support my answer, In a document I read, it talks about how the spanish took over the indians ,so the indians could become the spanish slaves, so the captain could make money which means he will have more gold. This document is a quote from a book titled In Defense of the indians written by Bartolome De las Casas in the year of 1521. A quote that supports my evidence to prove that people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities is “ The Spanish captain, meanwhile requested the local[leaders] to bring him large quantities of gold,this being the main object of the expedition”. My evidence proves how people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because the indians are being marginalized because they are being put to the side and mistreated by the spanish.

In addition to, How people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities is how the FHA [Federal Housing Administration] is marginalizing black people rating or reading them as rated “D” and not fit for FHA Insurance.There’s a document that I read that talks about how a system ruled by people was having power and putting people to the side because their race and nationality, This document is from a Internet article called “The Case for Reparations” by Ta-Nahesi Coates written in june 2014. A quote that shows my evidence is marginalizing black people by rating /reading them as rated “D” and not fit for FHA, It states “The FHA [Federal Housing Adminstration] has adopted a system of maps that rated neighborhoods according to their perceived stability”. This quote implies people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people with different identities because its shows that those people had made a organized way to show that black people are judged by their color and nationatlity and seen different from others in FHA.

Finally, people with power are able to marginalize and exploit people because the aztecs dismemebered innocent people . I read this document that I learned soemthing new from where it talks about how these people called Aztecs bulid a realationship with these innocent people and then after pulled apart (dismemebered) in public view. This document is a recording of a sacrifice Ritual ,created by 17 yr Aztec Scribe told to Friar Bernardino de Sahagun in 1529. A quote from the document that is evidence is “He treated like our most royal family member during the long year leading up to his sacrifice”. This quote shows that they treat Tezcatlipoca with respect and like a king until the end of the year where the Aztecs kill him.

Assignment #6 – The Columbus Narratives

What is something that you learned about Christopher Columbus that you did not know before? Something I learned about Christopher Columbus that I didn’t know before is that He killed a lot of people to own land .

2. Do think Christopher Columbus deserves his own holiday? Explain your answer.

Honestly, I think Christopher Columbus Doesn’t deserve his own Holiday because for one he murdered people to own a lot of land and forced people to kill people so they won’t get killed.

1.What RACE do you identify yourself as? Explain your answer. The race I identify myself as is Black because that’s how I’m Identified by people with privilege and power.

2.What NATIONALITY do you identify yourself as? Explain your answer. The nationality I identify myself as is American because I live in United States.

3. What is an ETHNICITY you identify yourself with? Explain your answer. An ethnicity I identify myself as is lower class because I’m a little poor .

5.Why do you think Question #4 was optional? Explain your answer.

Question #4 was optional because a lot of people don’t like to say their gender because they think their gonna get judge.

Assignment #5

Identity is what people see their self as or define who they are.Dominant Narratives are stories that people in power or privilege tell about someone else not their self.A story that people who has less power tell about themselves is a Counter Narrative. I think its important to tell a counter narrative about dominant narratives people say about your identity because nobody can tell you about yourself but yourself because nobody knows you like yourself.

To Begin with Dominant narratives ,they are used very frequently in the world. Dominant Narratives is a story that people with privilege and power tell about someone who doesn’t have power. I picked the Dominant Narrative one about chicken. I chose that because it shows and people in power judge and tell something that’s not true not ALL black people love chicken.Another Dominant Narrative chose was the one that says Arrest Black Babies before they become criminals.It shows that people of power think black people are born criminals.

To Begin with a counter narrative is a story or perspective that people who are marginalized tell about themselves. I chose to pick black college graduates boys and girls because people in power or who have privilege always say black people are all criminals and that’s not true. Another picture I chose was black girls from Stanford University basketball team because it shows that not all black people do drugs and turn out to be on the streets.

To Begin with Identity. Identity is the qualities of a person that define who they are. I chose a picture of my and my basketball sister because its defines who I am , I’m a basketball player. Another picture I chose was the ones one with my friends because they are a part of me and my family and I love to hang out with my friends.

One of my chosen identities I chose was Seafood, I chose that because I love Gumbo.

No I don’t think the avatar of myself truly shows what I look like because I have tight eyes and light brown skin color.

The parts that show chosen identities on my cartoon avatar is her eyes ,glasses,eyebrows. The parts that show assigned identity is my hair and eyebrows and lips.
